Morocco Knock Out Netherlands On Penalties To Set Up Canada Clash

June 30 (THEWILL) — Morocco produced another unforgettable FIFA World Cup moment on Monday, defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a dramatic 1-1 draw to secure a place in the Round of 16.

Ismael Saibari converted the winning penalty to spark wild celebrations at Estadio Monterrey, capping a resilient performance by the Atlas Lions, who recovered from conceding late in the second half before prevailing from the spot.

Morocco controlled much of the contest, dictating possession with an impressive 70 per cent share of the ball while completing passes with remarkable accuracy. They also created the better opportunities, registering 12 shots and forcing the Dutch defence onto the back foot for long periods.

Despite Morocco’s dominance, it was the Netherlands who struck first. In the 72nd minute, Wout Weghorst flicked on a long pass into the path of Crysencio Summerville, whose low cross found Cody Gakpo. The Liverpool forward arrived at the perfect moment to finish from close range, putting the Dutch within touching distance of the Round of 16.

As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Morocco refused to surrender. Substitute Chemsdine Talbi delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, where defender Issa Diop rose unmarked to head beyond Bart Verbruggen and send the match into extra time.

The additional 30 minutes offered few clear-cut chances, although Verbruggen produced an outstanding save to deny Soufiane Rahimi what looked to be the winning goal, ensuring the contest would be settled by penalties.

The shootout proved as tense as the match itself. The Netherlands converted through Teun Koopmeiners and Wout Weghorst but saw Patrick Kluivert and Quinten Timber miss crucial attempts. Morocco also suffered an early setback when Neil El Aynaoui struck the crossbar, yet Soufiane Rahimi and Chemsdine Talbi kept their composure from the spot.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou then delivered the decisive moment, diving to deny Crysencio Summerville and handing Saibari the opportunity to send Morocco through. The midfielder made no mistake, confidently firing home the winning penalty to complete a memorable victory.

The result extends Morocco’s remarkable reputation as one of international football’s most resilient tournament teams and sends them into a Round of 16 showdown with co-hosts Canada in Houston on July 4. For the Netherlands, it is a painful exit after surrendering victory deep into stoppage time despite taking a late lead.
