Abia LP Chairman Breaks Silence on Amobi Ogah, Onyejeocha, Abure Crisis, Predicts Landslide Victory Before 2pm in 2027
The Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Abia State, Hon. Peter Azubuike, has declared that there is no reason to replace the member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, describing him as one of the best-performing members of the House of Representatives in Nigeria.
Azubuike made the remarks on Monday during his first official media briefing with journalists at the Labour Party State Secretariat in Umuahia, where he spoke on the party’s preparations for the 2027 general elections, the state of the Labour Party in Abia, the party’s recently concluded primaries and the lingering leadership dispute at the national level.
Speaking on the political contest involving former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, and the incumbent federal lawmaker, Hon. Amobi Ogah, the Labour Party chairman said although Onyejeocha has every constitutional right to contest any election, there is no justification for removing a lawmaker who has delivered outstanding results within a short period.
According to him, politics should be about service, performance and the overall interest of the people rather than personal ambition.
“With all due respect to Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, she has every constitutional right to contest any election. Politics is about interests and I respect that. But the question is, after spending sixteen years in the House of Representatives, what exactly is she still looking for there?” Azubuike asked.
He noted that Onyejeocha represented the constituency for about sixteen uninterrupted years between 2007 and 2023 before serving as Minister of State for Labour and Employment, adding that it was only fair to allow another leader to continue serving the people.
Azubuike maintained that Ogah has distinguished himself through effective representation, constituency projects and empowerment programmes within less than four years in office.
“Today we have one of the very best-performing members of the House of Representatives. Why should anyone think about changing him? How do you remove one of your best players from the pitch?” he asked.
The LP chairman challenged critics to compare the records of both politicians.
“Compare sixteen years with less than four years. Compare the achievements, the empowerment programmes, the constituency interventions and the impact. The difference is very clear.”
He further described Ogah as one of the most impactful first-term lawmakers in Nigeria, saying the federal lawmaker has continued to empower youths and women, execute constituency projects and maintain close contact with his constituents despite the nation’s economic challenges.
According to Azubuike, Ogah’s legislative contributions, intellectual capacity and grassroots connection have made him one of the country’s outstanding lawmakers.
“He is one of the very best not just in Abia State but in Nigeria. In terms of intellectual capacity, performance, empowerment and constituency impact, Hon. Amobi Ogah has distinguished himself,” he said.
The Labour Party chairman also questioned the political wisdom of seeking a return to the National Assembly after already serving sixteen years and becoming a federal minister.
He argued that political leaders should create opportunities for others instead of concentrating public offices around one individual.
“Sometimes we must look beyond surface politics. If someone has represented the constituency for sixteen years and also served as minister, shouldn’t there be room for others to grow?” he asked.
Azubuike, however, declined to comment on the ongoing court case involving the constituency, insisting that the matter should be left for the judiciary to determine.
Turning to the 2027 general elections, the Labour Party chairman expressed confidence that the party remains the strongest political force in Abia State and would comfortably retain power.
According to him, the performance of Governor Alex Otti and the growing acceptance of the Labour Party across the state have strengthened public confidence in the party.
“If elections were conducted today, before 2 p.m. we would have won the election. We can take that to the bank. One thing we are enjoying is the love we are getting from Abians,” he declared.
Azubuike attributed the confidence to what he described as the restoration of governance and dignity under Governor Otti’s administration, saying Abians are now proud of the direction of the state.
He disclosed that one of the first achievements of the new state leadership was reconciling aggrieved members and rebuilding unity within the party.
“Consolidation was the first thing we did when we came on board. We reached out to aggrieved members and brought them back because the Labour Party is one family built on love,” he said.
The chairman explained that after holding a stakeholders’ meeting, the party developed a clear roadmap to strengthen its grassroots structure, improve mobilisation and prepare effectively for the coming elections.
On the leadership dispute involving the Julius Abure faction, Azubuike dismissed suggestions that it poses any threat to the Labour Party.
He likened the faction to “a snake whose head has been cut off,” saying it no longer has any real influence.
“There is no cause for worry. The Labour Party remains one united family recognised by INEC,” he said.
The chairman also dismissed reports that another faction could produce a governorship candidate for the 2027 election, insisting that the Labour Party belongs to its members and critical stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and not to any individual.
He further disclosed that the party has continued to attract prominent politicians into its fold, describing the growing number of defections as evidence of public confidence in the Labour Party.
The LP chairman expressing confidence that Governor Alex Otti’s performance has created what he described as the “Otti Wave,” which he believes will secure victory for the governor and other Labour Party candidates in the 2027 general elections.
He urged party members to remain united and focused, stressing that the Labour Party remains committed to good governance, effective representation and delivering democratic dividends to the people of Abia State.
