In his remarks, U.S. Consul General, Rick Swart, who retires at the end of July, described his posting to Nigeria as the highlight of his diplomatic career.

“I’m deeply grateful that you are here to celebrate America’s 250th Independence Day with us.
“Of all the places where my wife, Bonnie, and I could have concluded our diplomatic journey, I cannot imagine a better place than Lagos, Nigeria.
“Lagos is a city like no other, defined by creativity, resilience, enterprise and, above all, the warmth and generosity of the Nigerian people.
“The friendships we have built here will remain with us for a lifetime.”
The Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Mission, Keith Heffern, said the “Freedom 250” celebration reflected America’s 250-year journey and its hopes for the future. He added that Nigeria remains one of the United States’ most important partners in sub-Saharan Africa.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu congratulated the United States on the milestone and reaffirmed Lagos’ commitment to strengthening partnerships in trade, technology, education, healthcare, and investment.
The event ended with a fireworks display and networking sessions celebrating the long-standing friendship between Nigeria and the United States.
