Kylian Mbappé Makes World Cup History, Becomes Tournament’s Greatest Goalscorer of All Time
Kylian Mbappé has etched his name deeper into football history after becoming the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history, further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest players the game has ever produced.
The French captain achieved the historic feat after scoring twice in France’s clash against England, taking his World Cup tally to an unprecedented 22 goals. The remarkable milestone sees him surpass Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who had earlier in the 2026 FIFA World Cup moved to the top of the all-time scoring chart with 21 goals.
Mbappé’s latest accomplishment marks another defining chapter in an extraordinary international career that continues to rewrite football’s record books. At just 27 years old, the France forward has not only overtaken some of the sport’s most celebrated legends but has done so with astonishing efficiency.

Mbappé’s rise to the summit has been driven by a phenomenal scoring rate. The French superstar reached 22 World Cup goals in just 22 appearances, maintaining an extraordinary average of one goal per game on football’s biggest stage.
In contrast, Messi reached his 21st World Cup goal in his 33rd appearance for Argentina, highlighting the incredible pace at which Mbappé has shattered one of the sport’s most prestigious records.
His World Cup journey has been nothing short of sensational. Mbappé announced himself to the world with four goals at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, followed it up with eight goals in Qatar in 2022, and delivered a stunning 10-goal campaign at the 2026 tournament to claim sole ownership of the all-time scoring record.
While Lionel Messi’s remarkable career, iconic performances, and unforgettable World Cup moments remain among the greatest in football history, the title of the FIFA World Cup’s most prolific goalscorer now belongs exclusively to Kylian Mbappé.
With age still firmly on his side, the French captain appears poised to extend the record even further, leaving future generations with an even greater benchmark to chase on football’s grandest stage.
