5 Dangerous Mistakes That Could Make Your Political Candidate Lose an Election

Politics is not just about having a popular candidate, money or influential supporters. Sometimes, the actions of political followers and campaign teams can seriously damage the reputation of the very candidate they are trying to promote.

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, politicians, supporters and political parties should pay attention to how their activities influence public confidence.

Five mistakes that deserve serious attention.

1. Insulting and Attacking People Who Disagree With Your Candidate

One major problem during political campaigns is the tendency of supporters to insult everyone who holds a different opinion.

Some supporters attack religious leaders, traditional rulers, journalists and ordinary citizens simply because they question their preferred candidate.

Political disagreements are normal in a democracy. However, intimidation, abusive language and personal attacks can discourage meaningful discussions and damage public trust.

Remember: Supporting a politician does not mean making enemies of everyone who disagrees with you.

2. Spreading Fake News and Unverified Allegations

Social media has become an important part of Nigerian politics, but it has also made misinformation easier to spread.

Exercise your democratic right responsibly, peacefully and lawfully.

Fake endorsements, manipulated videos, fabricated statements and false allegations can circulate widely before the truth becomes known.

Supporters sometimes share such materials without checking their authenticity.

When false information is exposed, the resulting controversy can distract attention from important policy discussions.

A political campaign should be built on verifiable facts, not manufactured stories.

3. Promoting Vote Buying, Violence and Political Intimidation

Elections should provide citizens with the freedom to choose their leaders without threats or financial inducement.

Vote buying, intimidation and electoral violence undermine democratic participation and may constitute offences under Nigerian electoral law.

Supporters who engage in these activities may expose themselves and others to legal consequences.

No political ambition should be considered more important than peaceful, credible elections.

4. Making Unrealistic Promises and Ignoring Accountability

Political campaigns often feature ambitious promises about jobs, infrastructure, education, healthcare and economic development.

However, promises without clear explanations of costs, timelines and implementation plans can raise difficult questions about credibility.

Political candidates should be prepared to explain their proposals, acknowledge existing challenges and answer legitimate questions about their records.

Citizens deserve realistic commitments rather than attractive slogans alone.

Accountability should begin before an election, not only after a candidate assumes office.

5. Disrespecting Ordinary Citizens and Dismissing Their Concerns

Political conversations sometimes focus heavily on prominent individuals, endorsements and public rallies while overlooking the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians.

Issues such as unemployment, insecurity, rising living costs, education and healthcare affect people’s lives and deserve serious discussion.

Dismissing citizens who raise these concerns can create resentment and weaken constructive political engagement.

A democratic political environment should make room for different opinions, including criticism from people who previously supported a candidate.

Listening to citizens is an essential part of responsible political leadership.

An election is not merely a competition for political office. It is also an opportunity for citizens to examine competing ideas, records and proposals.

Supporters and political organisations have a responsibility to avoid misinformation, violence, intimidation and conduct that undermines public confidence.

Ultimately, election results depend on voters and many different factors. None of these five issues alone determines whether a candidate wins or loses.
