July 19 , () — The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has elected Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), as its next President, making her the first woman in more than two decades to lead the country’s foremost body of legal practitioners following a decisive victory in the association’s nationwide electronic election.

reports that Badejo-Okusanya, the only female candidate in the three-way contest, polled 12,317 votes, representing 47.18 per cent of the 26,106 valid votes cast, to emerge the winner of the election conducted by the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA).

She defeated fellow Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, who garnered 7,934 votes (30.39 per cent), and Olumuyiwa Akinboro, who secured 5,855 votes (22.43 per cent), according to the final results published on the ECNBA’s live election results dashboard after the close of polls on Sunday morning.

The NBA presidential election was conducted through an electronic voting platform over 24 hours, commencing at 7:35 a.m. on Saturday and concluding at 7:34 a.m. on Sunday.

Thousands of eligible lawyers across Nigeria participated in the exercise, which has become the association’s preferred voting system to enhance transparency, credibility, and wider participation in its electoral process.

The ECNBA maintained a live results dashboard throughout the exercise, allowing members to monitor the vote count until the final declaration of results.

Decisive Victory

The official figures showed that Badejo-Okusanya secured an outright lead over her closest challenger by 4,383 votes, underscoring the broad support she enjoyed across the NBA’s membership.

Akangbe finished second with 7,934 votes, while Akinboro placed third with 5,855 votes, completing the three-horse race.

The outcome confirmed Badejo-Okusanya as President-elect with a clear mandate from members of the association.

Her election is being celebrated as a landmark achievement for the Nigerian legal profession.

Badejo-Okusanya will succeed the incumbent NBA President, Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, upon her inauguration, becoming the first woman in more than two decades to lead the association.
