Gov Fubara Fixes January 2027 for Creek Road Market Completion
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has fixed January 2027 as the target for completing the 700-shop Creek Road Market in Port Harcourt, amid efforts to end roadside trading and facilitate road rehabilitation in the Old Port Harcourt Township.
The governor announced the deadline on Friday during an inspection of the project, noting that the relocation of traders to the new facility would enable the completion of resurfacing works along Creek Road.
The first phase of the market comprises approximately 700 shops and stalls, divided into wet and dry sections to accommodate traders currently operating along the road and neighbouring streets.
Street trading has reportedly obstructed road rehabilitation by SETRACO, the contractor handling the project. The proposed relocation is expected to create the space needed for the contractor to complete the resurfacing work.
Fubara expressed satisfaction with the progress of construction and commended the contractor. He also acknowledged funding concerns, assuring that the state government would intervene to ensure the project is delivered within the stipulated timeframe.
However, meeting the January deadline will require sustained funding, timely completion of construction and the provision of facilities necessary for traders to operate effectively. The government will also need to ensure that traders move into the market and comply with regulations against roadside trading.
The governor said the project was designed to ease traffic congestion, improve sanitation, reduce environmental and public health risks, and restore order to the historic township.
With the completion target approaching, attention will be on whether the market can be delivered and made operational on schedule, allowing road rehabilitation to proceed without further disruption.
