Abia State has emerged as the top-performing state in Nigeria in the 2026 National Examinations Council (NECO) results, recording an impressive performance rate of 81.78 per cent.

The result places Abia ahead of nine other states that recorded the strongest reported performances in the 2026 NECO examinations, further highlighting the state’s growing profile in education and academic development.
According to figures from the 2026 NECO results, Abia State topped the national ranking with 81.78 per cent, maintaining a clear lead over its closest contender, Ebonyi State, which recorded 81.03 per cent.
The performance means Abia finished 0.75 percentage points ahead of Ebonyi, while the gap between Abia and third-placed Ekiti State stood at 4.10 percentage points.
The strong showing places Abia at the forefront of the national academic performance table, with the state accounting for the highest reported performance rate among the 10 leading states.
Ekiti State ranked third with 77.68 per cent, followed by Delta State with 75.17 per cent and Osun State with 74.31 per cent.
Lagos State recorded 74.15 per cent to occupy sixth position, narrowly ahead of Oyo State, which posted 74.12 per cent.
Imo State came eighth with 74.10 per cent, while Bayelsa and Ogun States completed the top 10 with 73.92 per cent and 73.34 per cent respectively.
