Kaduna State’s ambitious investment in clean and affordable public transportation is increasingly emerging as one of the most impactful social intervention programmes in Northern Nigeria, with more than 3.2 million residents benefiting from the state’s free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mass transit scheme within a year.

The milestone, disclosed by the Acting Managing Director of Kaduna Line and Acting Director General of the Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority (KADSTRA), Engr. Inuwa Ibrahim, underscores the growing significance of sustainable transportation as a tool for economic relief and social inclusion amid prevailing economic pressures across the country.

Speaking during an inspection of newly constructed CNG bus terminals and bus stops in Kaduna, Ibrahim revealed that the administration of Governor Uba Sani has made substantial progress in transforming the state’s public transport ecosystem through a combination of modern infrastructure, digital technology and environmentally friendly mobility solutions.

At the heart of the initiative are 100 CNG-powered buses currently providing free transportation services across key routes within the state. Supporting this fleet is an expansive network of 200 modern bus stops, designed to improve passenger convenience, safety and operational efficiency.

According to Ibrahim, more than 80 per cent of the bus stop construction project has already been completed, with the remaining facilities expected to be delivered in the coming months.

“As part of the Governor’s transportation transformation agenda, these bus stops are being developed to support the operation of the CNG buses and provide residents with a modern and organised public transport experience,” he said.

One of the scheme’s most significant achievements has been its direct economic impact on citizens.

KADSTRA estimates that commuters have collectively saved over ₦3.5 billion in transportation costs within a year due to the free transit programme, providing critical relief for households grappling with rising living expenses.

The flagship route stretching from Rigachikun through Kawo to Sabon Tasha serves more than 30 communities daily, creating a reliable mobility corridor for workers, students, traders and other residents who depend on public transportation for their daily activities.

Beyond affordability, Kaduna’s transport reform is distinguished by its embrace of technology.

Ibrahim disclosed that the entire system has been digitised through the deployment of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) devices installed in all operational buses.
Through a central control centre, authorities can monitor vehicle movements in real time, track operational performance and maintain surveillance across bus stops to strengthen security and service delivery.

The integration of digital monitoring tools places Kaduna among the few sub-national governments in Nigeria actively deploying smart transport management systems to improve accountability, passenger safety and operational oversight.

The state’s commitment to clean energy transportation is also aligned with broader national efforts to promote CNG adoption as a cheaper and more environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional fuel powered vehicles.
Looking ahead, the government plans to extend the free CNG bus service to Zaria and Kafanchan.

Ibrahim explained that operations in the two major urban centres would commence once CNG refuelling infrastructure is fully established.

The planned expansion signals a broader vision of creating an interconnected and sustainable transportation network that serves residents across Kaduna State while reducing commuting costs and environmental impact.

As Nigeria continues to explore practical solutions to urban mobility challenges and rising transportation costs, Kaduna’s free CNG transit programme is increasingly being viewed as a model of how strategic investments in public transportation can deliver measurable economic benefits, improve access to mobility and accelerate the transition toward cleaner energy solutions.

With 3.2 million passenger trips recorded, billions of naira saved by commuters and major infrastructure projects nearing completion, Kaduna’s transport transformation story offers a compelling example of governance driven by tangible public impact rather than promises alone.
