The initiative, which marked the second edition of the foundation’s widow support programme, was held at ECWA Gospel Church, Marafa, along Ilorin Road, Prison Quarters, Kaduna, during the church’s Widows’ Week observance.

Speaking at the occasion, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Surv. Elder Maikano Samson, MNIS, MNSF, expressed delight at the opportunity to keep the memory of his late wife alive through practical acts of compassion.

Recounting the journey, he disclosed that the foundation’s first edition took place in July this year, after which a report of the initiative attracted the attention of a well meaning individual who, according to him, donated ₦1 million for distribution to beneficiaries but requested that his identity remain undisclosed.

The chairman clarified that the money distributed during the exercise was not his personal contribution, but the donation of the anonymous benefactor.

He explained that the beneficiaries were selected through a process involving names sourced from ECWA Gospel Church, Marafa, and other selected individuals, including vulnerable persons identified through connections with his late wife’s former workplace, DICON. Each beneficiary received ₦10,000, with the selection extending beyond widows to other vulnerable individuals.

He called on individuals, organisations and well meaning Nigerians to partner with the foundation in reaching more vulnerable people, including orphans, children and young people who need assistance to return to school, and families facing difficult circumstances.

He stressed that the organisation was not established as a religious body and remained open to supporting people from different backgrounds where needs were genuine and assistance was possible.

In emotional testimonies, two beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the intervention.

Mrs. Doris Dorcas Maya, a widow, said she trusted the foundation and expressed confidence in the source of its financial support, praying for greater blessings upon its founders and more opportunities for the organisation to reach others.

Similarly, Mrs. Aminatu Hassan, a widow and mother of five, expressed joy over the assistance, describing it as timely support for her family.

Overcome with emotion, she said she did not know how her name had been selected among the beneficiaries and prayed for the foundation to grow stronger and undertake greater humanitarian projects.

Their testimonies underscored the significance of even modest financial assistance to households struggling with economic hardship and the responsibilities of raising children without a spouse.

The guest speaker, Her Royal Highness Sarauniya Deborah Hannatu Emmanuel Maisababi, who also spoke as a widow, commended the chairman and HIMS Foundation for their commitment to touching lives positively.

Speaking in line with the theme of the ECWA Women’s Fellowship programme, “Keep Your Lamps Burning,” drawn from Luke 12:35, she emphasised the importance of sustaining faith, hope and service to humanity.

She noted that one meaningful way to honour the late Hajara was to continue making positive impacts across communities and among people in need.

Also speaking, Rev. Ahmed Zumunta Bashayi, a member of the foundation’s Board of Trustees and a former minister at ECWA Gospel Church, Marafa, eulogised the late Hajara and commended Samson for sustaining her legacy.

He recalled that Hajara had made a positive impact on his life during her lifetime and was always concerned whenever he experienced difficulties.

He expressed gratitude for being part of the humanitarian initiative and pledged continued commitment to ensuring that support from well meaning individuals reached the right beneficiaries, by God’s grace.

The occasion attracted guests and church leaders from different locations.

Rev. Iliya Samaila, Pastor in Charge of ECWA Gospel Church, Marafa, was present alongside associates, while the Women’s Fellowship leadership of ECWA Good News Church, Maigero, paid a special visit to the minister. Members of the Local Church Council (LCC) Executive also attended the service, making the gathering a memorable convergence of worship, fellowship, thanksgiving and humanitarian service.

Beyond the financial assistance, the second edition of the programme reinforced the message that a departed loved one’s legacy can continue to inspire compassion, restore hope and encourage collective responsibility towards society’s most vulnerable.
