July 20, () — Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has cast fresh doubt over his future after becoming emotional during his post match press conference following Sunday’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Lionel Scaloni struggled to contain his emotions after Argentina’s reign as world champions came to an end, admitting he is unsure whether he will remain in charge of La Albiceleste beyond the expiration of his current contract.

Spain ended Argentina’s hopes of retaining the FIFA World Cup with a disciplined 1-0 extra-time victory at MetLife Stadium, where Ferran Torres’ 106th-minute winner handed La Roja their second world title and denied Scaloni a place in football history.

The 48-year-old had been bidding to become only the second manager after Italy’s Vittorio Pozzo to guide a nation to consecutive World Cup triumphs. Instead, he was left fighting back tears as questions turned to his future

Scaloni stated;

The staff and players gave everything until the last second. I think I owe it to myself to take some time to reflect.”

After pausing to compose himself, Scaloni added: “Please bear with me, I’m not sure if I can go on.”

The former Argentina international described managing the national team as the pinnacle of his career but acknowledged the enormous mental demands of sustaining success at the highest level.

He stated,

“This position is incredible. It’s a dream place to be. None of us expected to be here. To keep going you need a lot. You have to reset mentally, reboot, and build another group like this. That’s extremely hard to do again.”

Unable to continue, Scaloni stood up, apologised to reporters, and left the press conference.

“It’s really tough. I’m very sorry,” he said before walking away.

Scaloni has overseen one of the most successful periods in Argentina’s football history, leading the country to the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, another Copa América title, and a second successive World Cup final in 2026.
