The commissioner further disclosed plans to integrate public payments into a unified digital platform linked to the Treasury Single Account (TSA), alongside a proposed payment card that would enable commuters to pay fares across public transportation services, including buses and ferries.

In a related development, the Commissioner for Transport, Dr Anthony Luke, said the government was moving to eliminate illegal motor parks and unauthorised roadside loading points as part of efforts to restore order, improve road safety and ensure the free flow of traffic.

Luke, who also spoke at the briefing, said the government expected significant progress in removing illegal parks and loading points before Christmas, warning that unauthorised operations on public roads would not be tolerated.

He highlighted the ongoing construction of a CNG bus terminal at Ikot Akpe, Ikot Offot, in Uyo Local Government Area, describing it as a major investment in affordable, accessible and environmentally friendly transportation.

The proposed terminal will feature a loading bay, VIP lounge, automatic car wash, restaurant, spare-parts centre, electric vehicle charging station, technical college, fleet maintenance workshop and fuelling station. Plans also include surveillance cameras, a police post and a clinic.

Luke added that 31 sub-terminals would be established across the state’s 31 local government areas to improve transportation access and connectivity between communities.

He said the CNG initiative would reduce dependence on petrol, encourage cleaner energy use, and support revenue generation through an online payment system.

The commissioner also disclosed that commercial tricycles and minibuses were being incorporated into a digital identification and monitoring system, with registered vehicles carrying scannable barcodes to aid identification and security operations.

According to him, biometric registration under the scheme is free and is expected to help deter criminal activities by making registered operators easier to identify and trace.

“The era of people robbing people inside Keke is over,” Luke said, emphasising the government’s determination to improve passenger safety and regulate commercial tricycle operations.

Meanwhile, the Delivery Adviser to the Governor on Transport, Hon Orman Esin, said the administration was also prioritising the blue economy through investments in water transportation, maritime tourism and commerce.

Esin said the government was working to strengthen ferry services by providing additional boats to improve movement along the state’s waterways and expand economic opportunities for coastal communities.

He also disclosed plans to develop the existing museum in Oron in partnership with the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, with a view to promoting maritime tourism and preserving the state’s cultural heritage.

The additional boats are expected to bear the names of former Akwa Ibom governors, including MV Allison, MV Unoma, MV Martha and MV Patience.

Esin said sustained investment in maritime infrastructure, tourism and water transportation would help unlock the economic potential of the state’s waterways, create opportunities for businesses and strengthen Akwa Ibom’s appeal as a destination for investment and tourism.

He said the initiatives form part of Governor Umo Eno’s broader development agenda, which seeks to improve public services, strengthen security, expand revenue generation and promote more efficient and sustainable transportation across Akwa Ibom State.
