Police Arrests 46 Suspects Over Attack on Peter Obi’s Convoy in Benue
The Benue State Police Command has arrested 46 suspects in connection with the disruption and alleged attack on the convoy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as authorities intensify efforts to identify all those linked to the incident.
The arrests were disclosed on Wednesday by the Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, who said investigations into the incident were still ongoing. According to him, the command is also tracking key leaders of the youths allegedly involved in the confrontation.
The police boss warned that the command would not tolerate political intolerance, violence or any action capable of threatening peace and public order as the country moves closer to the general elections.
Nwadiogbu stressed that the police would continue to take all necessary measures to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify every individual involved and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The incident occurred as Obi travelled to Yelewata, where he was scheduled to meet with residents and commiserate with victims of the deadly attacks that occurred in the community in June 2025.
The former Anambra State governor’s convoy reportedly encountered a roadblock a few metres away from the airport while travelling along the Makurdi-Gboko federal highway.
The two-lane highway became the scene of a tense confrontation after the convoy was stopped, with the development triggering concerns over political tolerance and security ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The latest arrests mark a significant step in the police investigation, although the command has indicated that more suspects could be apprehended as investigators continue to trace those believed to have played leading roles in the incident.
