Abia State Govt, Security Agencies Deepen Partnership to Strengthen Security Communication and Public Confidence
The Abia State Government has moved to deepen its partnership with security agencies operating in the state, with a renewed commitment to strengthening communication, information sharing and coordination as part of efforts to consolidate the prevailing peace and security across the state.
The commitment was reaffirmed on Thursday, August 13, 2026, when Public Relations Officers and Communication Officers of various security agencies in Abia State paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, at his office at the State Secretariat, Ugurube Layout, Umuahia.
The meeting provided an avenue for the government and security communication officers to explore practical measures for improving collaboration, ensuring timely dissemination of security information and strengthening public confidence in the state’s security architecture.
Speaking during the engagement, Prince Kanu described the visit as an important step towards establishing a stronger and more coordinated working relationship between the Abia State Government and communication officers of the various security formations.
He stressed the indispensable relationship between security and development, noting that effective governance and economic progress could only thrive in an atmosphere where lives and property are adequately protected.
“There is every need for the state government to collaborate with the security agencies. Security is the bedrock on which society thrives.”
The Commissioner said the administration of Governor Alex Otti has continued to place security high on its priority list, explaining that sustained government investments and partnerships in the sector have contributed significantly to the peaceful atmosphere being experienced across Abia.
“You can spend all the money in the world. If you don’t have security, nothing really moves,” he said.
According to him, the protection of lives and property remains one of the fundamental responsibilities of government, but achieving that responsibility requires a dependable security environment supported by effective communication and cooperation among all relevant stakeholders.
Prince Kanu also drew attention to the increasingly strategic role played by security spokespersons in contemporary society, particularly in an era where misinformation and disinformation can rapidly create fear, confusion and distrust.
He emphasized the need for security communication officers to provide the public with accurate, timely and responsible information, noting that credible information is essential to maintaining public confidence and supporting the work of security agencies.
The Commissioner explained that the proposed collaboration would create an avenue for improved coordination and more unified communication between the government and security agencies, particularly on matters affecting public safety.
“It is not enough to just visit. The important thing is what we make out of this visit going forward,” he said.
Prince Kanu added that the Ministry of Information would engage further with the security communication officers, examine the proposals presented by the delegation and work towards developing practical recommendations that could subsequently be presented to Governor Otti for consideration.
Prince Kanu further assured the delegation that the State Government would continue to consolidate its security achievements by strengthening partnerships with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders.
He recalled the recent Southeast Security Summit hosted by Abia State, noting that the high-level gathering demonstrated the importance the Otti administration attaches to security and underscored the necessity of sustained cooperation among governments, security agencies and other stakeholders.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Sir Chris Onwuegbu, welcomed the delegation and assured the security communication officers of the Ministry’s readiness to work closely with them.
Onwuegbu said a stronger working relationship between the government and security agencies’ communication departments would enhance information dissemination, improve public understanding of security matters and ultimately contribute to greater confidence in the state’s security architecture.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, ACC Linus Kalu Ikpe, commended the Abia State Government for what he described as its developmental strides and efforts towards strengthening communication, transparency and public trust in governance.
Ikpe explained that the delegation’s visit was primarily aimed at seeking a stronger and more structured partnership with the State Government, particularly in the area of security communication.
He said the team of security spokespersons was committed to promoting accurate, timely and responsible information management across Abia State, stressing that communication has become an increasingly important component of modern security operations.
According to him, security communication officers occupy a critical position in today’s security environment, as the quality, speed and accuracy of information released to the public can significantly influence public perception, cooperation and confidence in security institutions.
He therefore called for greater synergy among the various security communication officers in the state, particularly as the political and electoral season approaches, noting that coordinated communication would help reduce misinformation, strengthen public awareness and improve the effectiveness of security agencies.
Ikpe proposed measures aimed at enhancing information sharing, improving coordination and building public confidence and safety through consistent and unified communication efforts.
He expressed appreciation to the Abia State Government and the Commissioner for Information for their continued support, while expressing optimism that the proposed partnership would translate into tangible improvements in security communication and public engagement across the state.
The engagement therefore marked a significant step towards creating a more coordinated communication framework between the Abia State Government and security agencies, with both sides recognizing that effective security goes beyond operational activities to include credible information, public enlightenment, inter-agency cooperation and sustained trust between 
security institutions and the people they serve.
