Why LASODA , MVAA Team Up For Special Vehicle Plates For Persons With Disabilities

Lagos is set to make commuting easier for Persons With Disabilities as two key state agencies have begun work on a new vehicle identification system just for them.

The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs, LASODA, and the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, MVAA, met in Lagos to kick off discussions on rolling out customised number plates for PWDs and those who transport them.

The meeting was part of efforts to push inclusion forward and make daily movement less difficult for PWDs, parents of children with disabilities, and caregivers.

Speaking at the meeting, MVAA Permanent Secretary Mr. Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola described the proposal as a direct reflection of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”

“This is inclusive governance in action. We are committed to supporting the process and we believe this collaboration will produce meaningful outcomes,” he said.
Muri-Okunola also noted that MVAA has already opened discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps and will begin the administrative steps needed to implement the plan.

LASODA General Manager, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the new plates must be designed to serve all categories of disability. She stressed that it should also include caregivers and parents who drive PWDs.

“Inclusion should be seen in the policies we create. These plates will aid identification, improve access, and show that PWDs are valued members of our society,” Oyetunde-Lawal said.
She called on all Lagosians to support inclusion, saying it is a responsibility everyone shares.

Both agencies pledged to work together to move the initiative quickly. The project is supported by the Lagos State Special People’s Law, which empowers LASODA to protect the rights of PWDs and ensure equal opportunities.

Directors and senior officials from LASODA and MVAA were present at the meeting, which ended with both sides reaffirming their commitment.

Once approved, the specialised plates are expected to improve recognition for PWDs on Lagos roads, make parking and other services more accessible, and further position Lagos as a disability-friendly state.
