Terrorist Kill 12 in Adamawa Church Attack

• At least 12 people were killed and two others injured when suspected terrorists invaded Nzangula village in Guyaku Ward, Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

September 07, () — At least 12 people have been killed in a fresh terrorist attack on Nzangula village in Guyaku Ward, Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, in a bloody assault that also left a woman abducted and a church, homes and shops destroyed.

The Chairman of Gombi Local Government Area, Markus Ishaya, disclosed the updated casualty figure on Monday, saying the attackers struck the community in the early hours when residents were largely asleep.

Ishaya said two other victims sustained injuries in the attack and were receiving treatment at the Cottage Hospital in Gombi.

According to him, the attackers also abducted a woman and inflicted extensive damage on the community.

“Report from Nzangula village of Guyaku Ward, Gombi LGA, stated that 12 people were killed, two were injured and are presently at Cottage Hospital, Gombi.

One lady was abducted. EYN Church was burned. Three houses were also burned, and two shops were vandalised,” the chairman said.

The latest account followed an earlier report that 11 people had been killed in an attack on Zaranga village in the same Gombi Local Government Area.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly, said suspected Boko Haram fighters invaded the community in the early hours of Monday.

He said the attackers opened fire on residents before setting houses ablaze, forcing some people to flee into surrounding bushes and forests.

“For now, 11 dead bodies have been recovered. Many people are still missing. Search teams and security personnel are in the forest searching for the missing people,” the resident said.

Another resident described the attack as a devastating personal tragedy, saying his wife and two other members of his family were among those killed.

“My wife and two of my family members were also killed during the early morning invasion of my village,” he said.

The earlier casualty figure of 11 was based on bodies recovered by residents, while the subsequent figure of 12 was provided by the Gombi council chairman after receiving reports from the affected community.

The full number of casualties could therefore become clearer as search and assessment operations continue.

Gombi, located in an area of Adamawa that has faced insecurity linked to insurgent activities, has previously witnessed deadly attacks.

In April, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri confirmed that 29 people were killed in an attack in Guyaku community in the same local government area, underscoring the severity of the security challenge confronting the area.

Monday’s assault therefore adds to a growing pattern of violence in communities where residents remain vulnerable to attacks despite ongoing security operations.
