JUST IN: Prince Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi Named New King of Tooro Kingdom After Death of King Oyo
Prince Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi has been named the new Omukama of the Tooro Kingdom, succeeding the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died in the United States on August 27, 2026, after a period of illness.
The development ushers in a new era for the historic Ugandan kingdom, coming just days after the death of King Oyo, whose reign lasted more than three decades and made him one of the most recognised traditional rulers in Uganda.
Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi, a member of the Tooro royal family, emerged as the successor following consultations within the royal establishment. His selection sets the stage for the formal transition of the monarchy and the eventual enthronement of the new king in line with Tooro customs and traditions.
The announcement comes as the kingdom simultaneously prepares for the final rites and burial arrangements for the late King Oyo, whose death has plunged Tooro into mourning.
King Oyo, who was born on April 16, 1992, became Omukama of Tooro on September 17, 1995, following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.
He was just three years old when he ascended the throne, making him one of the youngest monarchs in the world at the time. His extraordinary accession attracted international attention and placed the Tooro monarchy firmly in the global spotlight.
A Reign Marked by Cultural and Social Development:
Over the course of his lengthy reign, King Oyo presided over a period in which the Tooro Kingdom maintained a significant cultural and social presence in Uganda.
Under his leadership, the kingdom supported and participated in initiatives focused on education, healthcare, environmental conservation, tourism and the general welfare of its subjects.
Although Uganda operates as a republic, traditional institutions such as the Tooro Kingdom continue to hold considerable cultural importance, serving as custodians of history, identity, customs and community values.
King Oyo’s death therefore represents not only the passing of a monarch but also the end of a significant chapter in the modern history of the Tooro Kingdom.
Transition Begins Under New Monarch:
With Prince Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi now designated as the next Omukama, attention has shifted to the formal processes required to complete the royal transition.
The new king is expected to assume the responsibility of safeguarding the traditions and cultural heritage of Tooro while providing symbolic and traditional leadership to the kingdom’s subjects.
His emergence also comes at a sensitive moment, as royal authorities continue preparations for the burial of King Oyo and the associated traditional ceremonies expected to accompany the transition.
Across Tooro and other parts of Uganda, the succession is being closely followed because of the deep cultural significance of the monarchy and the extraordinary length of King Oyo’s reign.
Further announcements are expected from the Tooro Kingdom regarding the new king’s official royal title, installation ceremony and enthronement programme.
The transition will ultimately mark the beginning of a new chapter for one of Uganda’s most prominent traditional kingdoms, even as the people of Tooro continue to mourn the monarch who occupied its throne for more than 30 years.
