Johannesburg Disconnects Nigerian Consulate Over R7 Million Municipal Debt
The City of Johannesburg has disconnected the Consulate General of Nigeria in Illovo over an outstanding municipal debt estimated at approximately R7 million.
The development was disclosed by the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Dada Morero, who said municipal teams carried out the electricity disconnection at the Nigerian diplomatic facility.
Morero said the action was part of the city’s efforts to enforce compliance with municipal payment obligations, stressing that government and diplomatic institutions were not exempt from settling outstanding bills.
“Our teams have just disconnected the Consulate General of Nigeria in Illovo, where their municipal account currently reflects an outstanding balance of approximately R7 million.

“The electricity service has already been disconnected, and Johannesburg Water recently enforced a Level 2 disconnection. This underscores the importance of uniform compliance with payment obligations for all residents,“ he said.

The mayor’s statement indicates that the Nigerian consulate has faced enforcement measures from more than one municipal utility, with Johannesburg Water previously carrying out a Level 2 disconnection over unpaid charges.
