Abia Launches Farm-to-Harvest Monitoring as State Government Deepens Support for 15,322 Farmers
The Abia State Government has commenced a comprehensive farm-to-harvest monitoring strategy aimed at ensuring that farmers benefiting from its ongoing Phase Two Farm Inputs Distribution Programme make proper and productive use of the agricultural inputs supplied to them.
The Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Cliff Agbaeze, FCIB, disclosed this on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, while speaking with journalists in his office in Umuahia, stressing that the government’s intervention in agriculture goes beyond simply distributing farm inputs.
Under the new monitoring strategy, agricultural officers are visiting beneficiary farmers across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state to monitor activities from planting through cultivation and ultimately to harvest.
The exercise is being undertaken in collaboration with the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudik- Agribusiness Incubation Centre (MOUAU-ABIC), which is providing technical guidance and support to farmers as they deploy the improved seedlings, fertilizers and agrochemicals supplied under the programme.
The approach is designed to give the government a clearer picture of how the agricultural intervention is performing on the ground, while ensuring that beneficiaries receive timely assistance whenever they encounter challenges during the farming cycle.
The Phase Two Farm Inputs Distribution Programme is targeting 15,322 additional farmers across Abia State, building on Phase One, which supported 3,312 farmers.
The Ministry has also placed emphasis on reaching genuine farmers whose details have been captured in its database, a measure intended to strengthen transparency, accountability and proper targeting of government agricultural interventions.
Through the farm-to-harvest monitoring system, the Ministry of Agriculture will be able to identify challenges early, deploy extension services where necessary and evaluate the actual productivity and impact of the resources committed by the state government to agriculture.
The initiative forms part of the administration’s broader agricultural transformation agenda under His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, which seeks to move Abia from predominantly subsistence farming towards a modern, productive and commercially viable agribusiness sector.
Beyond providing immediate inputs, the government’s strategy is increasingly focused on ensuring that farmers achieve better yields, improve their productivity and ultimately derive sustainable economic value from agriculture.
Dr. Agbaeze consequently assured farmers participating in the programme of the Ministry’s continued support throughout the farming season, making it clear that government assistance is not designed to stop at the point of input distribution but will follow beneficiaries from the farm all 
the way to harvest.
