Abia Declares War on Absenteeism, Warns Civil Servants and Supervisors
The Abia State Government has drawn a firm line against absenteeism and indiscipline in the Civil Service, declaring that officers who abandon their duty posts without official approval, as well as superiors who conceal or protect them, will face disciplinary measures.
The Head of Service, Mr. Benson Ojeikere, issued the warning during a meeting with the Body of Permanent Secretaries as part of ongoing efforts to reposition the state’s Civil Service for greater efficiency, professionalism, accountability and improved service delivery.
Ojeikere made it clear that the practice of shielding officers who routinely stay away from work would no longer be tolerated, stressing that absenteeism and other forms of indiscipline undermine productivity and weaken the ability of government institutions to effectively serve the people.
He charged Permanent Secretaries with taking ownership of the reforms and policies of the state government and ensuring their effective implementation across their respective ministries. He also urged them to ensure that they and their staff understand the Public Service Rules and Regulations, particularly the consequences attached to violations.
According to the Head of Service, Permanent Secretaries occupy critical leadership positions and must therefore demonstrate the capacity to deliver results, even in the face of operational and administrative challenges.
He further tasked them with creating healthy and productive work environments anchored on mutual respect, professionalism, collaboration and teamwork, while ensuring that the integrity and reputation of the Abia State Civil Service are protected at all times.
Ojeikere also emphasised the importance of maintaining cordial and professional relationships between Permanent Secretaries, their superiors and colleagues. He urged them to lead by example through responsibility, commitment, discipline and a strong sense of duty.
While reaffirming the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare and working conditions of civil servants, the Head of Service stressed that government’s efforts must be matched by corresponding dedication from the workforce.
He noted that improved welfare, better working conditions and institutional reforms must be accompanied by diligence, punctuality, productivity and a renewed commitment to public service.
The ongoing reforms, he explained, are designed to transform the Abia State Civil Service into a more efficient, disciplined, professional and results-driven institution capable of responding effectively to the needs and expectations of citizens.
The Head of Service consequently called on civil servants across the state to take their responsibilities seriously, adhere strictly to the rules governing public service and support the government’s efforts to build a Civil Service defined by professionalism, accountability and excellence.
