‘We will put emergency on corruption, Tinubu must be held to account’ – Peter Obi
Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr Peter Obi, has vowed that nobody will steal public funds under his watch.
Obi spoke in Enugu on Thursday while interfacing with the people of the state ahead of his presidential campaign.
He blamed Nigeria’s condition on corruption, stressing that the majority of the people were suffering while public funds were being pilfered.

“Today, our country is suffering. Today, people are hungry. Today, our children do not have employment. Today, Nigeria is not secure,” he lamented.

Obi also bemoaned the disunity in Nigeria, promising to unite the country as president, just as he said he would be at the forefront of efforts to restore security.
“As president of Nigeria, we will declare an emergency on corruption. People must stop stealing public money. Public money must be used for the public good.
Every second brings Nigerians closer to exercising their democratic right and shaping the future of our nation.
Exercise your democratic right responsibly, peacefully and lawfully.
“That is why I am making my commitment. We will be accountable; we will be open. If we borrow money, you will know what the money is being borrowed for.
“As president of Nigeria, I will unite Nigeria. As president of Nigeria, I will secure Nigeria. We will deal with insecurity. If they go to the bush, I will be in the bush with them.”

The former Anambra governor also downplayed the issue of ethnicity in the election, stressing that he should be voted for based on competence.
“Please, I am asking for your vote because I am the most qualified to be president of Nigeria.
“Let the other ones—all the other candidates—go around Nigeria and tell Nigerians what they will do. I am with you today. Let the other candidates go and do the same thing.
“We want every candidate to go around,” he declared.
Obi also disagreed with President Bola Tinubu for saying he would not campaign across the 36 states of the country.
He told the gathering: “Your president said he will not be able to campaign all over Nigeria. Please, do not listen to him. He must come and campaign all over Nigeria. We must know our president.
“Our president has travelled out of this country over 350 times. And now we are asking him: ‘Please spend at least 36 days—36 days—and go around Nigeria and tell them what you have been doing for the past three years.’
“He must go around Nigeria and tell them what he used the nearly $100 billion he borrowed for.
“He must come and tell us where our money is. All the money he earned, we want to know what it was used for.
“Our president must come and account for the three years he has been in office.
“We want him to go around. If he doesn’t want to go around, he should go.”
