ABA — Chairman of Abia State Tricycle Operators Union, ASTOPU, Mr. Victor Azubike, says union has mobilised members to register and obtain Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, ahead of 2027 general elections.
Azubike made this known Wednesday during solidarity rally organised by operators in Aba to express support for administration of Governor Alex Otti.

He said union was also working to integrate its members in more than 80 polling units in Aba into Labour Party structure to ensure active participation in re-election campaign.
“We are fully prepared for 2027 elections. Right from voters’ registration, we mobilised our people to register and have their PVCs because that is the number one strength of election,” he said.
Azubike said the operators organised the rally independently to appreciate the governor for road construction and other infrastructure projects across state, noting tricycle operators were among major beneficiaries.

He cited the ongoing reconstruction of Uratta and Old Express roads in Aba, saying governor’s policies have created favourable environments for tricycle operators to conduct their business.
According to him, the rally was initiated by operators without government involvement and members participated enthusiastically.
Also speaking, Senior Special Assistant to Governor on Transport, Dr. Obioma Nwogbe, commended ASTOPU for supporting the Abia Government and pledging to mobilise for the Labour Party ahead of 2027.

Nwogbe attributed the operators’ support to improved road infrastructure and policies which created more favourable operating environment, noting that improved roads reduced frequency of mechanical problems and enabled them conduct businesses more freely.
He commended ASTOPU leadership for intervening in members’ challenges, including recovery of stolen tricycles and support for bereaved families, citing instances where union executives sought governor’s assistance following the death of family member, resulting in support for burial arrangements.
He said the government recognised the importance of tricycle operators in the state’s transport system, describing them as vital link in helping commuters reach destinations.
“Transport is major gateway for nation’s economy, and that is why His Excellency has worked towards developing transport infrastructure, particularly roads, which ordinary people can easily access,” he said.
Nwogbe added that the government was pleased with their contributions, emphasising that the union’s political support extended beyond Otti’s re-election bid to other Labour Party candidates in 2027 general elections.
MEDIA TODAYreports that members of the union turned out en-masse for the rally, marching from Osisioma Junction to Aba Town Hall.
