‘How The Grinch Stole Christmas’ Sequel In Development At Universal

June 19 () — Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are developing a sequel to the holiday classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Jim Carrey is in talks to reprise his role as the Grinch, while Ron Howard is expected to return as director. Howard and his longtime producing partner Brian Grazer will also produce the film.

Released in 2000, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” was a major box office success, earning more than $345 million worldwide and becoming one of the most popular Christmas films of its era.

The sequel’s script will be written by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel. Plot details have not been revealed, and the project remains in development. No release date has been announced.

Carrey has previously expressed interest in returning to the role, especially if new technology reduces the heavy makeup needed for the role.

Based on Dr Seuss’ classic book, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” followed the Grinch as he tried to stop the residents of Whoville from celebrating Christmas.

The story was later adapted into the 2018 animated film “The Grinch”, which was also a commercial success.

If the project moves forward, it will mark Carrey’s return to one of his most iconic roles more than 25 years after the original film’s release.
