Popular content creator and influencer Mariam Oyakhilome has shared her experience of hiring a family friend as her personal assistant (PA), revealing how the working relationship eventually came to an end.

Mariam, in a post shared on her Instagram page, explained that she initially hesitated to employ the lady because she prefers working with people she has no prior relationship with.

According to her, she believes hiring strangers makes it easier to hold employees accountable when issues arise. However, after discussing the matter with her father, she agreed to give the family friend the job and initially offered her a monthly salary of ₦150,000.

“This is why I don’t like employing people I know. One of my family friends reached out and said she wanted to do the job. I said no, I cannot employ you because I know you.

I want somebody I don’t know, so that I can hold them accountable. I spoke to my dad, and he told me to employ her so she could support herself. So, I put her on a ₦150,000 salary,” she said.

Mariam said she later discovered that the woman could cook and decided to add cooking to her responsibilities. As a result, she increased her salary by ₦100,000, bringing her monthly pay to ₦250,000.

She added that she also provided food and covered her transportation expenses.

However, Mariam said the arrangement later became complicated when the woman informed her that she had been bitten by a scorpion and had to be hospitalised.

According to the content creator, the woman later revealed that she had submitted her CV to another company before securing the PA position and had been contacted by the company.

Mariam said she subsequently decided to end their working relationship. She later found out that the company had turned down the woman because of her age.

The situation, according to Mariam, took another turn when the woman’s mother contacted her and asked her to continue supporting the family, including paying her daughter’s school fees.

“I give her food, then I still pay her ₦250K. Now the mother is calling me to support them and pay her school fees. If na una, una go pay that kind thing? No be see finish be that one?” she added.

Mariam’s experience has since generated discussions online, with many people sharing their views on the difficulties that can arise when employing friends, relatives or people within one’s personal circle.
