A Nigerian lady has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his continued stay in France while the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is taking place in New York.
The woman questioned the President’s decision to remain in France after travelling out of Nigeria on August 30 for a working vacation in Europe.
Tinubu initially travelled to London before proceeding to Paris, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré. The Presidency later announced that the President had extended his working vacation by a few days and was expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima travelled to New York to represent Tinubu and lead Nigeria’s delegation at the 81st UN General Assembly. According to the Federal Government, Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in high-level engagements on behalf of the country.
The lady, however, expressed her dissatisfaction with the President’s absence from the global gathering, particularly in light of Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) by the United States over religious freedom concerns.
Reacting to the development, she said:
“The president of Nigeria left Nigeria for a vacation and went to France while his country is currently a country of particular concern. Had dinner with the president of France, then the president of France left the president of Nigeria in France, went to the United Nations for the United Nations general assembly and the president of Nigeria is still in France while other presidents are at the UN. You can’t be normal and support APC.”
Her comments come amid public debate over Tinubu’s decision to skip the UN General Assembly in person, with the Presidency maintaining that Nigeria remains fully represented through the Vice President.
