Mexico Beat South Africa 2-0 to Open 2026 World Cup Campaign

June 12, (THEWILL) — Mexico began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a winning note, defeating South Africa 2-0 in the tournament’s opening match on Thursday night in Mexico City.

The hosts took an early lead in the ninth minute through Julian Quinones after a costly defensive error by South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole. Erik Lira capitalised on the mistake to set up Quinones, who calmly slotted the ball home.

South Africa’s hopes of mounting a comeback suffered a setback when Sithole was shown a red card for a foul on Brian Gutierrez. However, Mexico failed to make the resulting free-kick count.

Despite enjoying a numerical advantage, Mexico had to wait until the 67th minute to extend their lead.

Veteran striker Raul Jimenez headed home from the far post to seal victory for the hosts.

The match ended on a heated note, with two more players sent off. South Africa’s Themba Zwane received a red card for violent conduct, while Mexico defender Cesar Montes was also dismissed in stoppage time following a foul.

The fixture revived memories of the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, when the two nations played out a 1-1 draw. Siphiwe Tshabalala gave the hosts the lead before Rafael Marquez equalised for Mexico.

Mexico will face South Korea in their next Group A fixture, while South Africa will take on the Czech Republic.
