Nigerian content creator and comedian Gloria ‘Maraji’ Imo has weighed in on the debate surrounding women who openly centre their identities around motherhood and marriage.

Maraji questioned why some people are bothered when women choose to identify themselves through their roles as wives and mothers, especially when similar criticism is rarely directed at men.

The social media personality shared her thoughts while responding to the growing conversations around women who use titles such as “Mummy Jayden” or describe themselves primarily through their children and spouses.

According to Maraji, women should be allowed to embrace those identities if that is what they choose to do, rather than being pressured to conform to society’s expectations.

“Let women call themselves ‘Mummy Jayden.’ Why do you care?” she asked.

Maraji also pointed out what she described as a double standard, noting that men are generally not subjected to the same scrutiny when their identities or public profiles are closely connected to their families.

Her comments have sparked reactions online, with social media users sharing different views on whether women should be encouraged to maintain identities outside their roles as wives and mothers.

@Naija2capeblog:”People really do have a lot of opinions about how women choose to identify once they become mothers. If calling herself Mummy Jayden makes her happy and it’s not hurting anyone, it’s hard to see the problem. Men center their personalities around plenty of things too and rarely get the same commentary.”

@Digital_bee:”“Maraji is right that the double standard is loud. My guy posts ‘daddy duties’ content every other day and people just call him a good father. Same energy when a woman does it and suddenly she’s ‘lost herself.’ Make it make sense.””
