July 20, (THEWILL) — Germany are set to usher in a new era under one of the country’s most successful modern coaches, with Jürgen Klopp agreeing to take charge of the national team after productive talks with German Football Association officials in New York.

The 59-year-old is expected to sign a contract that will keep him in charge through the 2030 FIFA World Cup, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann, whose tenure came to an end after Germany’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 World Cup.

Germany topped their group but suffered a shock defeat to Ecuador before being eliminated by Paraguay in a penalty shootout in the Round of 32, marking the first time in the nation’s history that they exited a World Cup via penalties.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke met Klopp in New York, where both parties reached what the federation described as a constructive agreement on the essential framework of the contract.

In a statement, the DFB said the appointment still requires formal approval from the supervisory board and shareholders of DFB GmbH and Co. KG, while Klopp’s departure from his current role with Red Bull must also be finalised.

Klopp has not managed a team since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season after a trophy-laden nine-year spell that brought the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, and other major honours to Anfield.

He subsequently took up the position of Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull, overseeing the company’s network of football clubs.

Reports in Germany indicate that his contract included a clause allowing him to leave should the Germany national team job become available.

Negotiations over his exit from Red Bull are expected to continue with chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff before the move is officially completed.

Before the agreement was reached, Klopp revealed in an interview with German broadcaster Magenta TV that he had rediscovered his energy after stepping away from day-to-day coaching and was prepared for a return to the touchline.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool boss is also expected to reshape Germany’s coaching staff, with trusted assistants Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders among those tipped to join him in the national team setup.

Klopp’s appointment represents a significant statement of intent from the DFB as Germany seeks to restore its status among the world’s football elite.

Since lifting the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, the four-time Champions have endured a difficult run at major tournaments, suffering group-stage exits in both 2018 and 2022 before this year’s Round of 32 disappointment.

With Klopp now poised to take charge, Germany will hope one of their most celebrated coaches can inspire a fresh chapter and guide the national team back to competing for the game’s biggest honours.
