November 5, () – Global fintech companies lost approximately $420bn in combined market capitalisation over five years, as investors reassessed valuations amid intensifying competition and concerns about the sector’s growth prospects.

The decline placed fintech among the four sectors with the largest combined losses in market value among the world’s 1,000 biggest publicly listed companies between August 13, 2021, and September 25, 2026, according to an analysis by financial research firm BestBrokers.

The report found that 172 of the 1,000 companies recorded declines in market value during the period, with payments companies PayPal, Block and Adyen among the biggest losers.

The American payments company’s decline reflects the reversal in investor expectations following the surge in digital payments adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic, when fintech companies attracted substantial investment and commanded elevated valuations.

Block, formerly known as Square, lost $77.6bn in market value, representing a 62.81 percent decline, as its market capitalisation dropped to $45.9bn.

Dutch payments company Adyen also recorded a significant contraction, shedding $51.15bn, or 61.94 percent, to close the period at $31.43bn.

Technology And Consumer-Facing Sectors Record Major Losses

The pressure on fintech valuations formed part of a broader decline across several industries.

Technology companies recorded the largest combined market capitalisation loss at $637.3bn, followed by food and beverage businesses, which shed $545.6bn. Fashion and apparel companies lost $472.7bn over the same period.

The findings point to a wider reassessment of company valuations, extending beyond financial technology to sectors that had previously benefited from strong investor demand.

Traditional financial institutions also faced substantial losses. According to the analysis, 15 banks and financial services companies collectively shed $203.5bn in market value.

China Merchants Bank recorded the largest absolute decline among the traditional financial institutions, losing $34.8bn, or 17.48 percent, to close the period with a market capitalisation of $164.31bn.

Ping A Bank experienced a sharper percentage decline, with its market value falling by 45.17 percent, representing a loss of $26.92bn, to $32.67bn.

Australia’s Macquarie Group lost $22.95bn, equivalent to 25.93 percent of its market value, while Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing shed $21.28bn, or 25.37 percent, to reach $62.63bn.

Other financial companies that recorded significant declines included Indonesia’s Bank Rakyat Indonesia, which lost $12.16bn, and British data analytics company Experian, whose market value fell by $10.44bn.

Competition Puts Pressure On Fintech Valuations

Commenting on the findings, BestBrokers Data Researcher and author Stanislava Savisheva said the declines reflected changing investor expectations about financial technology companies’ ability to sustain their valuations.

She noted that PayPal’s performance showed how quickly market expectations can shift when established payments platforms face stronger competition and questions about their growth prospects.

The losses suggest that the rapid expansion of digital financial services during the pandemic did not guarantee that fintech companies would sustain the valuations built during that period.

For investors, the changing market landscape has placed greater emphasis on companies’ ability to maintain growth, defend market share, and translate expanding digital transactions into sustained earnings.
