“We Are Drowning in Debt”: Favour Agbro’s Family Appeals to Nigerians for ₦7 Million to Clear Hospital Bills

The tragic case of 20-year-old nursing student Favour Agbro continues to dominate national discourse, with fresh developments emerging over her family’s financial struggles and the ongoing Police investigation.

Favour, who was from Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, died in early June 2026 after reportedly ingesting a toxic substance following an alleged sexual assault. She had travelled to Asaba after being invited by a 40-year-old content creator known online as “Odogwu Asaba,” an indigene of Enugu state, whose real name is Ifeanyi Ogbonna, for what was described as a content creation training opportunity.

Before her death, Favour recorded a distressing video in which she recounted the ordeal she said she experienced. The video later went viral, triggering widespread public outrage and calls for justice.

The Delta State Police Command confirmed in mid-July 2026 that the prime suspect, “Odogwu Asaba”, had been arrested and remains in Police custody.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the Suspect is undergoing thorough interrogation and will be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.

Amidst the criminal investigation, the bereaved family has made a public appeal for ₦7 million in financial assistance.

In a video statement featuring Favour Agbro’s parents and her twin sister, Faith, and facilitated by the family’s pro bono lawyer, Barrister Awele Ideal, the family clarified that the money is neither a demand nor a settlement sought from the accused. Rather, they described it as a desperate appeal to Nigerians and other well-meaning individuals to help offset mounting hospital debts.

According to the family, the emergency medical care and treatment Agbro received at multiple health facilities before her death left them with an outstanding hospital bill of approximately ₦7 million.

The family also disclosed that they have been required to provide logistical support, including a vehicle, for Police investigators travelling to Benin as part of the investigation, placing an additional financial burden on them.

The appeal has sparked divided reactions on social media. While many Nigerians have sympathised with the family’s plight, noting the enormous financial burden often borne by victims’ families during prolonged medical treatment and criminal investigations, others have questioned the amount being requested.

Some commentators have called on the family to publish hospital receipts, invoices, or account statements to substantiate the claimed expenses and promote transparency.

Further complicating the family’s pursuit of justice, Barrister Ideal recently alleged that the Suspect had made substantial out-of-court settlement offers in an apparent attempt to have the criminal case discontinued. The lawyer said he strongly advised the family against accepting any financial settlement, warning that doing so could undermine the integrity of the prosecution, derail the judicial process, and ultimately deny the late student justice.

As the Delta State Police Command continues its investigation, Favour Agbro’s family says it remains committed to seeing the case prosecuted to its conclusion while grappling with the emotional toll of their loss and the intense public scrutiny that often surrounds sexual assault cases.
