Elon Musk Reveals Why China Could Overtake US in AI

July 25, () — The global race for artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a competition not only of algorithms and innovation, but also of computing power, energy, and industrial capacity.
As the United States and China compete to shape the future of AI, Elon Musk believes the outcome may depend on which country can build and sustain the massive infrastructure required to develop the technology at scale.
The billionaire entrepreneur believes China has a realistic path to becoming the global leader in AI, not simply because of software breakthroughs, but because of the enormous physical resources needed to develop and deploy the technology.
The comments came during a conversation with Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist, who asked Musk directly, “Are you worried about the Chinese catching up and getting ahead?”
Musk’s answer was clear.

“Given that the Chinese AI companies are doing as well as they are with a relatively small amount of compute, it seems that if they had a lot of compute, there’s a good chance that they would be the leaders,” he said.
He added that China may eventually have access to the level of computing resources needed to compete at the highest level.
“At some point, they probably will have a lot of compute,” Musk said.

Why Musk Believes China’s Advantage Goes Beyond AI Models
The exchange highlights a growing debate around the future of artificial intelligence.
While much of the current competition between the US and China has focused on semiconductor technology, Musk argues that the real contest could involve something much bigger like energy, infrastructure, and manufacturing power.
When Beddoes pushed further, asking whether China would therefore become the leader in AI, Musk said there was “a good chance” it could happen.
He explained that AI development depends heavily on two key resources.
“You can think of the constraints on AI essentially being electricity and AI chips,” Musk said.
According to Musk, China’s advantage is not only its growing AI sector but also its ability to produce the resources needed to support it.
“If you look at electricity production, you can say like AI is a function of whatever the limiting factor is, if it’s chips or electricity, China has far more electricity than the United States,” he said.
Musk went further, saying China already produces more electricity than the United States, Europe, and India combined.
He predicted that China could eventually reach electricity production levels several times higher than America’s.
His argument is based on the idea that artificial intelligence will require more than brilliant engineers and powerful algorithms.
It will require massive data centres, reliable power supplies, and the ability to build machines at scale.
The conversation also moved beyond digital intelligence.
Musk pointed to robotics as another area where China has developed significant capability.
“For physical AI, the robots, China’s also got some very good robot companies,” he said. “China is very strong on robots, very strong on digital AI.”
That combination could become increasingly important as AI moves from screens into the real world through autonomous machines, industrial robots, and intelligent systems.
The discussion then turned to what the United States should do about China’s progress.
Beddoes asked Musk about American efforts to restrict China’s access to advanced technology, including export controls on AI chips.
“What should the US government do about this?” she asked. “Presumably it is a little alarming if you have an authoritarian regime far ahead in the most powerful technology.”
Musk questioned whether restrictions alone could determine the outcome of the race.
“The US government can pass some law that prevents US companies from using Chinese models, but they can’t stop the rest of the world from using them,” he said.
Beddoes then asked whether the US should at least prevent American companies from using Chinese AI models.
“I don’t think that helps,” Musk replied. “That won’t stop China from being the leader in AI.”
The exchange reflects a larger global competition over who will shape the next generation of technology.
The United States currently has major advantages in AI research, semiconductor design, and leading technology companies.
China, meanwhile, has scale in manufacturing, infrastructure, and energy.
As AI becomes more demanding, the competition may increasingly depend on the foundations behind the technology.
The future leaders of artificial intelligence may not only be the countries that create the smartest models.
They may also be the countries with the electricity, factories, and infrastructure to bring those models into everyday life.
