Chima Anyaso Foundation, NYSC Hold Medical Outreach in Abia

Hundreds of residents of Umuda Isingwu in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State on Thursday benefited from a free medical outreach organised by the Chima Anyaso Foundation in partnership with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) under its Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD).

The second-quarter 2026 outreach, held at the Umuda Isingwu Community Hall, provided residents with free medical consultations, health screening, dental and eye care, immunisation, health education, counselling, laboratory services and referrals.

Speaking at the event, the Abia State NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Yunusa Tanimu, described the initiative as a demonstration of the Scheme’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery in underserved communities through strategic partnerships.

He commended the Chima Anyaso Foundation for supporting the programme, noting that the collaboration highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in expanding access to quality healthcare, particularly in rural areas.

Tanimu said the NYSC’s Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers remains one of its flagship community development programmes, designed to bring essential healthcare services closer to vulnerable populations.

He appreciated the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig.-Gen. O. O. Nafiu, the Scheme’s management, healthcare professionals, community leaders and residents for their contributions to the success of the outreach.

The NYSC Coordinator also acknowledged the presence of the Chairman of Umuahia North Local Government Area, Hon. Smart Iheoma, describing his participation as a demonstration of the council’s commitment to the wellbeing of rural communities.

He explained that the outreach was delivered by corps members and healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists and laboratory scientists, who offered a wide range of free medical services.

Tanimu urged residents, especially women, children and the elderly, to take advantage of the intervention, stressing that preventive healthcare remains essential to improving public health.

He also called on corporate organisations, philanthropists and development partners to support the initiative with drugs, medical supplies and other resources to enable it to reach more communities across the state.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the organisers, describing the outreach as timely and impactful amid rising healthcare costs.

One of the beneficiaries, 83-year-old Mrs. Joy Nkemakolam, said the programme had provided quality medical care to many elderly residents who could not afford treatment, describing it as one of the biggest free medical outreaches ever held in the community.

Other residents also commended the Chima Anyaso Foundation and the NYSC for the initiative, saying it had brought relief to many families and strengthened access to healthcare at the grassroots.
