Canada Earn Historic First World Cup Point After Fighback Against Bosnia

Canada secured the first World Cup point in the nation’s history after battling to a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening Group B match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Friday.

Playing in front of a passionate home crowd in Toronto, the co-hosts showed resilience and determination to recover from an early setback and keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage firmly alive.

Bosnia and Herzegovina struck first when forward Jovo Lukic headed home from a corner midway through the first half, silencing the majority of supporters inside the stadium. The Europeans looked organised defensively and threatened on the counterattack as Canada struggled to turn possession into clear-cut opportunities.

The hosts responded positively after the break, increasing the pressure and pushing Bosnia deeper into their own half. Head coach Jesse Marsch introduced experienced striker Cyle Larin as Canada searched desperately for an equaliser.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 78th minute when Larin reacted quickest inside the penalty area to finish a well-worked attacking move, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters.

Canada continued to press for a winner in the closing stages but Bosnia held firm to secure a share of the spoils.

While the result may not have been the victory Canadian fans desired, it represented a significant milestone for the national team. Having lost all three matches during their previous World Cup appearance in Qatar four years ago, Canada finally claimed their first-ever point at football’s biggest tournament.

The draw leaves Group B finely balanced heading into the second round of fixtures, with Canada hoping the confidence gained from their spirited comeback can propel them toward a historic place in the knockout rounds.
