Abia Concludes Orientation for Newly Recruited Teachers
The Abia State Government has concluded a five-day orientation programme for newly recruited public-school teachers, charging them to apply the knowledge and skills acquired to improve learning outcomes across the state.

The programme, which commenced on September 8, ended on Saturday with a closing ceremony at the Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba. It brought together government officials, education administrators, school managers, facilitators and the newly recruited teachers.
The orientation was designed to prepare the teachers for effective classroom engagement, with sessions covering professional ethics, teaching practices, responsibilities and expectations in the public-school system.
Addressing the participants, the Executive Director of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Mrs. Lydia Onuoha, urged them to translate the lessons learnt into practical improvements in their classrooms.
Onuoha also called for unity and collaboration among the teachers, noting that their collective commitment was essential to the success of the state’s education reforms.
The Abia State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Madu Friday, formally welcomed the new teachers into the profession and urged them to remain dedicated to their duties.
He assured them of the union’s commitment to protecting the interests and welfare of teachers, adding that improved working conditions would contribute to better learning environments for pupils and students.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Chinedu Ubochi, said the teachers’ recruitment was not merely an employment opportunity but a responsibility to contribute to the development of the state’s education system.
Ubochi disclosed that Governor Alex Chioma Otti had approved a ₦25,000 stipend for each participant in recognition of their attendance at the orientation programme.
He further directed the teachers to report promptly to their respective places of assignment and commence their duties with dedication and a strong sense of responsibility.
The closing ceremony featured practical and creative presentations by the participants, including teaching aids produced by the Waste-to-Wealth class, poetry by the Language class and cultural dances by the Culture group.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Mrs. Faith Isani and Mr. Agwu Uro thanked the state government for the opportunity and pledged to put the knowledge and skills acquired during the programme into practice.
They commended the Otti administration’s focus on education, stressing the need for well-trained and committed teachers to prepare children for the future.
Among those present were Ubochi; Onuoha; Prof. Elohu Eluwa, Provost, Abia State College of Education, Technical and Agricultural Studies (ASCETA); Mrs. Kelechi Ogugbue, Head of Educational Services, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and Centre Coordinator, Aba Zone; and Comrade Madu Friday, Chairman of NUT in Abia State, among others.
With the orientation concluded, the newly recruited teachers are expected to proceed to their respective schools and translate the training into effective teaching, professionalism, creativity and commitment in the classroom.
