Edo State Govt Sets New Benchmark in Childcare with Modern Crèche
Recognising that a productive workforce is sustained by strong family support systems, the Edo State Government under the leadership of the Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, has established a modern standard crèche to support working parents by providing a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment for the care and early development of their children.
Managed by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, the facility underscores the administration’s unwavering commitment to child welfare, family-friendly governance and the wellbeing of working parents. The initiative is one of the Edo State Government’s strategic interventions aimed at easing the childcare responsibilities of nursing mothers and fathers during official hours, thereby enabling them to discharge their official duties with greater concentration and efficiency.
Strategically located within the Government Secretariat Complex, the crèche has been purposefully designed in line with contemporary early childhood education standards. It hosts child-friendly infrastructure, spacious and well-equipped playgrounds, age-appropriate learning resources, recreational facilities and a secure environment that fosters the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of every child.
The facility is staffed with professionally trained caregivers and early childhood educators, who deliver quality care and learning experiences tailored to fit the developmental needs of each child. To ensure effective learning and proper care, children are grouped into age-specific classes for infants, toddlers and preschoolers up to the age of three. In addition, the crèche provides holiday childcare services, ensuring uninterrupted care during school vacations and offering much-needed support to working families throughout the year.
Beyond serving as a childcare centre, the crèche delivers far-reaching social and economic benefits. By providing dependable childcare services, it enables parents to work with confidence and peace of mind, leading to improved productivity, reduced absenteeism, enhanced staff morale and stronger employee retention across the Public Service.
For the children, the facility offers a nurturing environment where structured play, guided learning and positive social interaction promote intellectual growth, language acquisition, creativity, emotional resilience and interpersonal skills, thereby laying a solid foundation for lifelong learning and holistic development.
The initiative also advances gender inclusion by enabling women to participate actively in the workforce, strengthens household economic stability, creates employment opportunities for childcare professionals and educators who contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of Edo State.
The Edo State Government Crèche stands as a shining example of visionary governance and strategic investment in human capital development. It reflects Sen. Okpebholo’s commitment to building a compassionate, inclusive and productive public service that places equal emphasis on workforce efficiency and family welfare.
As a model of excellence in early childhood care and education, the initiative offers a commendable blueprint that could be replicated across Edo State and Nigeria to expand access to quality childcare services and promote a more family-friendly workplace culture.
