As Akwa Ibom State celebrates its 39th anniversary today, September 23, 2026, Media Today Nigeria joins the government and people of the state in commemorating nearly four decades of cultural heritage, unity, resilience, and development. Created on September 23, 1987, from the former Cross River State, Akwa Ibom has continued to distinguish itself as a significant contributor to Nigeria’s economic, social, and cultural landscape. Popularly known as the Land of Promise, the state celebrates this historic milestone with pride in its identity and aspirations for a prosperous future.
Over the past 39 years, Akwa Ibom has grown into an important centre of economic activity, tourism, education, and cultural expression in Nigeria’s South-South geopolitical zone. With Uyo as its capital, the state is endowed with natural resources, a rich agricultural heritage, coastal attractions, and vibrant communities whose contributions continue to shape its development. Its rich cultural traditions, indigenous languages, colourful festivals, traditional attire, music, and culinary heritage remain enduring symbols of the identity and creativity of its people.
