Abia Slashes Teaching Qualification Fees for Non-Education Graduates, Targets 4,074 New Teachers
The Abia State Government has reduced the fees payable by graduates without education degrees who wish to obtain professional teaching qualifications at the Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, in a move aimed at making professional development more accessible to teachers across the state.
The disclosure was made by the moderator of the ongoing capacity-building workshop for 4,074 newly recruited teachers, Elder Ihuoma Ukaegbu, during a session focused on professional development and career progression.
Ukaegbu explained that the initiative was designed to provide graduates from non-education backgrounds with an easier pathway to acquire the professional qualifications required to build successful careers in teaching.
He encouraged teachers who had already commenced similar programmes at other institutions to continue with their studies, stressing that continuous professional development remained essential for effective classroom delivery, career progression and improved professional competence.
The moderator also urged the newly recruited teachers to take advantage of opportunities provided by the state government to upgrade their qualifications, broaden their knowledge and strengthen their capacity to serve effectively in Abia’s public schools.
The workshop also featured a session on statutory school record management, where facilitator Dr Nnenna Anyanwu highlighted the critical role of accurate documentation in ensuring effective school administration.
Anyanwu explained that properly maintained records were indispensable to the management of students, staff and school activities. She urged the teachers to ensure that official records remained accurate, up to date and properly preserved.
She further emphasised the need to protect confidential information contained in school documents and ensure strict compliance with approved procedures for the management and handling of official records.
Another facilitator, Mrs Laura Otti, took the teachers through the Abia First Reform and Agenda, drawing attention to its significance to the education sector and the important role teachers are expected to play in advancing the state’s ongoing reform programme.
Otti urged the newly recruited teachers to make professionalism, accountability, efficiency and continuous self-development central to their careers, stressing that the success of education reforms would depend significantly on the competence, commitment and character of teachers.
The facilitators further reminded the participants that their appointments carried responsibilities beyond classroom teaching, as they had also become public servants entrusted with the responsibility of serving the people with discipline, integrity and dedication.
The ongoing capacity-building workshop forms part of the Abia State Government’s broader efforts to strengthen the state’s teaching workforce and prepare the 4,074 newly recruited teachers for effective service delivery across public schools.
The programme is expected to equip the teachers with practical knowledge, professional skills and a deeper understanding of their responsibilities as the government continues its drive to improve the quality and effectiveness of education in Abia State.
