Peter Obi Names One Tinubu Policy He Would Retain If Elected President
Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has identified the floating of the naira as the one policy of President Bola Tinubu’s administration he would retain if elected president.
Obi made the disclosure during an exclusive interview with Arise TV, where he was asked to name at least one policy introduced by the Tinubu administration that he would maintain if given the opportunity to lead Nigeria.
Responding to the question, Obi singled out the naira’s floating exchange-rate regime, which was introduced by the Tinubu administration as part of its broader economic reforms.
“He has one, the floating of the Naira,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor’s response is notable given his broader criticism of the Tinubu administration’s economic management, particularly the impact of its reforms on inflation, household purchasing power and the cost of living.
However, by identifying the floating of the naira as a policy he would retain, Obi appeared to distinguish between the reform itself and the manner in which the government has implemented its wider economic agenda.
The naira exchange-rate reform has been one of the most consequential economic measures under the Tinubu administration, with the government moving to allow market forces to play a greater role in determining the currency’s value.
Obi’s position suggests that, despite his criticisms of the administration, he believes there is at least one aspect of its economic policy that should be maintained rather than reversed.
The statement comes as Obi and other political figures intensify their preparations and policy messaging ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with economic management expected to remain one of the central issues in the contest.
