Wire Road, Two Others Now Death Traps As Deplorable Holes, Flood Worsen In Benin City, Residents accuse Okpebholo Govt of Neglect. “Motorists drowning in potholes”

Residents of Benin City, Edo State are raising fresh alarm over the deplorable state of Wire Road and two other major roads, describing them as “death traps”due to massive potholes and perennial flooding.

Mr Glory Osagiobare and George Evbenghovben, residents lamented what they called “seeming neglect” by the administration of Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo to already dilapidated roads in the state capital.

“Instead of engaging experienced contractors to fix these roads, it appears the Governor may not be concerned,” one of the residents alleged.

Residents of the affected areas said Several motorists and commuters have been trapped and “drowned” in the massive potholes on Wire Road and the two other unnamed roads, especially during rainfall.

“Whenever it rains, the roads become worse and completely impassable. Vehicles break down, and lives are currently facing threats,” Mr Osagiobare said. “We are begging the Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to as a matter of urgency do something to save lives.”

The residents also recalled that the past administration of *Mr Godwin Obaseki had claimed to have rehabilitated the same roads with *“millions of naira wasted. According to them, the roads have now worsened and are more impassable than before.

“Money was spent, but today you cannot drive on those roads without damaging your car. It is a waste,” Mr Evbenghovben alleged.

With the rains intensifying, residents say the situation on Wire Road and the two other roads has become a daily nightmare for commuters, students and business owners.

They are now appealing to the Okpebholo-led government to mobilize competent contractors immediately to reconstruct the roads before more lives are lost or properties destroyed.

In a swift reaction, the State Commissioner for Information, Prince Kasim Afegbua described the roads as deliberate act of past administration to have allegedly wasted funds on shoddy works of the contractors, disclosing that Senator Monday Okpehbolo led administration was willing to fix all the deplorable roads in all the senatorial districts of the State.
