Global ride-hailing company Uber has announced plans to end its operations in Nigeria after 12 years in the country.

The company disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, September 2, saying it would wind down its Nigerian operations effective immediately following a review of its business.

Uber launched its Nigerian operations in Lagos in 2014 and went on to become one of the country’s major ride-hailing platforms.

The company expressed appreciation to Nigerians who used its platform to connect with independent transportation providers for daily commutes, visits to loved ones and other journeys.

Uber acknowledged that its departure could affect the routines of customers who relied on the platform and apologised for the inconvenience.

The company also stated that its Help Centre would remain available until September 23, 2026, to assist customers with final account-related enquiries.

The announcement has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians, with some expressing disappointment over the exit and others suggesting that competing ride-hailing companies could now benefit from Uber’s departure.
