Actor Michael Byrne Dies at 82
June 30 () — British actor Michael Byrne, best known for playing Nazi Colonel Ernst Vogel in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and Gellert Grindelwald in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1,” has died. He was 82.
Byrne died on June 20, 2026. His death was confirmed through an official obituary published by The Guardian. No cause of death has been announced.
He worked in film, television, and theatre for more than 60 years, appearing in over 170 productions. He also starred in films including “Braveheart,” “Tomorrow Never Dies,” “Gangs of New York,” “The Sum of All Fears,” and “Force 10 from Navarone.”
He was also well known to television audiences for playing Ted Page in the British soap “Coronation Street” from 2008 to 2010. His final screen appearance was in the 2023 comedy-drama “The Phoebus Files.”
Born in London on November 7, 1943, Byrne began acting in the early 1960s with Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company before building a long and successful career on stage and screen.

Byrne is survived by his separated wife, Carole Nimmons, their two daughters, Tara and Bryony, and three grandchildren. Although the couple had separated, Nimmons cared for him in his final days.
Fans and colleagues have paid tribute to Byrne, remembering his long career and lasting contribution to film, television, and theatre.
