UK Names Veteran Diplomat Peter Vowles As New High Commissioner To Nigeria

June 17, () — The United Kingdom has appointed seasoned diplomat and development expert, Peter Vowles, as its next High Commissioner to Nigeria, signalling London’s commitment to deepening strategic ties with Africa’s largest economy amid growing cooperation in trade, security and development.

The UK Government announced on Tuesday that Vowles will assume office in Abuja in September 2026, succeeding Dr Richard Montgomery CMG, who will remain in the position until the transition.

Vowles arrives with decades of diplomatic and international development experience, having most recently served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe between 2023 and 2026. He previously led the UK’s mission in Myanmar and occupied several senior leadership roles within the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and its predecessor, the Department for International Development (DFID).

His appointment comes at a time when Nigeria and the UK are seeking to expand economic partnerships, strengthen security cooperation and boost investments across critical sectors.

Reacting to his appointment, Vowles described Nigeria as a key partner for the United Kingdom.

“I am honoured to be appointed as British High Commissioner to Nigeria. Nigeria is a country of immense importance to the United Kingdom, and I look forward to working closely with Nigerian partners to strengthen our relationship across trade, development and security”, he said.

Before his ambassadorial postings, Vowles held senior positions as Transformation Director and Director for Asia, the Caribbean and Overseas Territories, while also serving in Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya.

His career in international development began in Zimbabwe, where he worked in the education and development sectors.

The appointment underscores the UK’s continued focus on strengthening diplomatic and economic engagement with Nigeria, one of its most significant partners in Africa.Peter-Vowles
