No Safety Threat As Lagos Govt Assesses Vandalised Bridge On Badagry Expressway

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has assured commuters that the vandalised bridge along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway poses no danger to motorists, despite the removal of some structural fittings by vandals.

Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance on Saturday during an inspection of the affected section at Vin-Niger in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area. Engineers who accompanied him confirmed that the bridge’s foundation and overall integrity remain intact.

“We came here to see things for ourselves,” the governor said. “The integrity of this bridge has not been compromised. However, let it be known that those who carried out this vandalism and those who buy stolen government materials will be tracked down and prosecuted.”

He described the incident as a wake-up call at a time when the state is investing heavily in the rehabilitation and expansion of its transport network.

The governor also raised alarm over similar destruction in FESTAC Town, where he said drainage slabs and iron rods were removed along Second and Seventh Avenues. He described it as “unacceptable sabotage” that endangers residents and wastes taxpayers’ money.

Sanwo-Olu called on Lagosians to take responsibility for protecting public infrastructure.

“When you see something, you should say something. Government cannot be everywhere 24/7. You also have a duty to protect what belongs to all of us,” he said.

He commended the Lagos State Police Command, Rapid Response Squad, Lagos State Neighbourhood Watch and KAI officials for their quick response to the Vin-Niger incident.

The visit was part of a broader assessment of the Lagos-Badagry corridor, including Alaba Rago and Orile, where the governor noted that the state had made progress in clearing illegal structures and restoring order.

The governor said the administration will focus on two key areas going forward: increased investment in infrastructure and stronger enforcement supported by community participation.

The Lagos-Badagry Expressway serves thousands of commuters, traders and businesses daily, linking Lagos to communities along the state’s western corridor. Sanwo-Olu reiterated that safeguarding the route remains a top priority.

He concluded with an appeal to residents: “Let’s take ownership of these facilities. Report any suspicious activity early so we can prevent damage before it happens.”
