Amaechi Sparks Identity Debate, Says He Stopped Identifying as Igbo After ADC VP Ticket Controversy
Former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has ignited fresh political and ethnic conversations after revealing that he no longer identifies himself as an Igbo man following the controversy surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential ticket.
Speaking during the 2026 Abuja Igbo Fest, Amaechi said he felt rejected by some members of the Igbo community during the political process, a development he said prompted him to stop publicly identifying as Igbo.
According to the former minister, he would only reclaim the identity if the Igbo people openly and publicly acknowledge and accept him as one of their own.
Amaechi’s remarks have since generated widespread reactions across Nigeria, with political observers, cultural groups, and social media users debating issues of ethnicity, identity, belonging, and the role of politics in shaping public perception.
