Abia Moves to Strengthen Power Supply in Umuahia with New Generation Plans
The Abia State Government is intensifying efforts to deliver a more reliable and sustainable electricity supply to residents and businesses within the Umuahia ring-fenced area, with plans underway to boost power generation and evacuation capacity.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed that the state government is pursuing the licensing of a power generation plant within the Umuahia ring-fenced area as part of a broader strategy to improve electricity availability.
He explained that the government is also working towards evacuating additional generation capacity from the Alaoji Power Plant to further strengthen power supply to the area.
The proposed measures are expected to significantly improve the reliability of electricity, support economic activities and provide households and businesses in Umuahia with better access to power.
Prince Kanu made the disclosure on Monday, August 24, 2026, while briefing journalists at the Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
