Abia Labour Party, NLC and TUC Agree to Work Together Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has held its first official meeting with the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other labour unions since the current State Working Committee (SWC), led by the State Chairman, Hon. Peter Azubuike, took office.

The meeting was held at the Labour Party State Secretariat on Tuesday, July 22, 2026. It was aimed at building a stronger relationship between the party and the labour unions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the meeting, the Abia State NLC Chairman, Comrade Okoro Ogbonna, praised the current leadership of the Labour Party. He said the party has changed for the better since Hon. Peter Azubuike became chairman. According to him, the unions have seen these positive changes and are ready to support and work with the party.

“There is a big difference between the Labour Party before and now. We have seen many positive changes, and that is why we have decided to work with your leadership. We are ready to partner with you,” he said.

Other labour leaders who attended the meeting included the NLC State Secretary, Comrade Chukwuma Ngeh; TUC Public Relations Officer, Comrade Oparaocha Chibueze; Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC) Chairperson, Dike Ngozi; and TUC Women Commission Chairperson, Osita Jennifer. They also promised to work closely with the Labour Party.

In his response, the Abia State Labour Party Chairman, Hon. Peter Azubuike, thanked the union leaders for their visit. He said the Labour Party belongs to the workers and described the unions as the real owners of the party.

“We, the current leaders, are only taking care of the party for now. The unions are the real owners of this party. We welcome you to take your rightful place so that we can work together and ensure victory for the Labour Party in 2027,” he said.

Azubuike said the good work being done by Governor Alex Otti under the “New Abia” programme can only continue if the Labour Party and the labour unions work together. He said their partnership will help the state continue to grow and develop.

He also said the party and the unions will prepare a joint plan that will guide their relationship and help them work together more effectively ahead of future elections.

On the issues raised by the labour leaders, Azubuike assured them that Governor Alex Otti is committed to improving the welfare of workers in the state. He promised to take their concerns to the governor and asked them to be patient, saying the government would continue to address their needs.

The meeting ended with both the Labour Party leadership and the labour unions agreeing to work together to strengthen the party and secure victory in the 2027 general elections.
