Abia Bus Driver Returns Over ₦400,000 Forgotten by Passenger, Earns Praise for Honesty
A commercial bus driver, Mr. Onyekachi Ikpendu, has demonstrated an uncommon act of honesty after returning more than ₦400,000 in cash and other personal belongings accidentally left behind by a passenger in his vehicle.
The incident occurred after Mrs. Nkechi John, a petty trader, boarded the commercial bus from Uzuakoli and headed towards the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Abia State.
Mrs. John reportedly alighted at Ubani Market but inadvertently left her bag inside the vehicle. Unknown to her at the time, the bag contained over ₦400,000 in cash, alongside other personal belongings.
It was only after she had left the vehicle that she realised the bag was missing. She immediately made her way to the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in the hope of tracing the vehicle and recovering her belongings.
On getting to the terminal, she was relieved to discover that the driver had already secured the bag, including the cash, and was waiting for its rightful owner to return.
The incident has since attracted commendation, with the driver being praised for choosing integrity at a time when the temptation to keep such a substantial amount of money could have been difficult to resist.
Speaking with journalists at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal on September 11, 2026, Mr. Ikpendu explained that he never considered keeping the money for himself, insisting that he was satisfied with making a living through honest work.
“I am grateful because I am not eating somebody’s sweat; I am eating my own.
“No amount of money I see now will move me to take what does not belong to me,” Mr. Ikpendu stated.
He further explained that returning the money was not only the right thing to do but also consistent with his belief that God rewards people who choose honesty and good deeds.
For Mrs. John, the recovery of the money came as a major relief, particularly because the cash was business capital.
The visibly grateful trader thanked Mr. Ikpendu for his sincerity and commended Governor Dr. Alex Otti for the establishment of the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal.
According to her, the existence of the terminal played a crucial role in helping her trace the vehicle and recover her belongings. She noted that without the terminal, locating the bus and recovering the money could have been considerably more difficult.
The incident has also been welcomed by the Abia State Government as an example of the kind of civic responsibility and integrity expected from residents.
Reacting to the development, the Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, commended Mr. Ikpendu for his honesty, describing his action as “a display of integrity, sincerity and commitment.”
The Commissioner said the driver’s decision to return the money was a positive example that should inspire other residents to do what is right even when there is no immediate external pressure or reward.
Dr. Ukaegbu also described the incident as an indication of what he considers a positive shift in the mindset of Abians, which he linked to the leadership and reforms of Governor Alex Otti.
According to Dr. Ukaegbu, “Our people are showing gratitude to His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, for the good work.
“Honestly, the mindset of the people is changing towards doing the right thing without even being compelled to do so.”Dr. Ukaegbu stated.
The Commissioner used the opportunity to encourage residents across the state to continue upholding honesty, integrity and responsible conduct in their everyday dealings.
He said Mr. Ikpendu’s action had demonstrated that acts of integrity, regardless of how ordinary they may appear, can have a significant impact on individuals and help strengthen trust within society.
The recovery of Mrs. John’s business money has therefore become more than a story of lost cash being returned. It has highlighted the importance of personal integrity and responsible citizenship, while placing the spotlight on a bus driver who chose to protect another person’s livelihood r
ather than benefit from her misfortune.
