Abia State Sustains Aggressive Environmental Sanitation Drive, Inspects 9,000 Premises Across 17 LGAs
The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a clean, healthy and environmentally sustainable state, with the Ministry of Environment sustaining its intensive house-to-house sanitary inspection programme across all 17 local government areas.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR.
Prince Kanu explained that the sustained environmental sanitation campaign has continued to yield positive results through regular inspections, public sensitisation and strict enforcement of environmental health regulations across communities in the state.
According to him, the Ministry of Environment carried out environmental health education, sensitisation and sanitary inspections in no fewer than 103 villages during the period under review, with officials engaging residents on proper waste disposal, hygiene practices and compliance with public health standards.
He further disclosed that approximately 9,000 premises were inspected to ensure compliance with environmental health standards, reflecting the government’s determination to create healthier communities and prevent environmental hazards.
The commissioner added that about 37,500 premises were issued abatement notices for various environmental health violations, while 2,500 premises successfully complied with the directives and underwent follow-up inspections, demonstrating increasing adherence to the state’s environmental sanitation regulations.
Prince Kanu attributed the steady progress recorded in environmental sanitation to the unwavering commitment of environmental health officials, as well as the growing cooperation of residents with government initiatives aimed at promoting cleaner surroundings and safeguarding public health.
He noted that the administration remains focused on strengthening environmental management through continuous monitoring, public enlightenment and enforcement of sanitation laws across the state.
Highlighting the impact of the ongoing exercise, the commissioner stated, “With these sanitary inspection interventions, Abia State continues to score very highly in environmental cleanliness among the comity of states in the country.“

businesses alike.
