Kogi University Expels Two Students Over Alleged Same-Sex Relationship

The management of Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, Kogi State, has expelled two students over alleged involvement in a same-sex relationship, while four others have been suspended for one academic session over their involvement in a fight.

The disciplinary measures were approved during the university’s 31st Regular Meeting of the Senate after it considered recommendations from the Students’ Disciplinary Committee. According to a statement issued on Friday by the university’s Information and Public Relations Unit, the sanctions were imposed in line with the provisions of the Students’ Handbook (Second Edition, as amended in 2025).

The expelled students were identified as Onumoko Hamza of the Department of Biology Education and Abdulazeez Eneji of the Department of Mining Engineering. The university, however, did not disclose when or where the alleged misconduct occurred.

The Senate also approved the rustication of Favour Akowe of the Department of Microbiology, Simbiat Babamuharuna of the Department of Biology, and Zainab Omayoza and Sukura Bukola, both of the Department of Biochemistry, for one academic session over their involvement in a fight.

Reaffirming its commitment to discipline and order, the university said it would continue to enforce its rules and regulations and would not hesitate to take disciplinary action against any student found guilty of misconduct.

The development comes against the backdrop of Nigeria’s Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, signed into law in January 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan. The law criminalizes same-sex marriage and certain same-sex relationships, with penalties that can include prison terms for offences under the Act.

The report also noted that defendants in a related legal matter pleaded not guilty, were granted bail, and the case was eventually struck out by a Federal High Court due to what the judge described as a lack of diligent prosecution by the police.
