Abia State Govt Begins Distribution of 50 Transformers to Boost Rural Electricity Across 17 LGAs
In a major step towards expanding access to reliable electricity and strengthening power infrastructure in rural communities, the Abia State Government has commenced the first phase of the distribution of 50 electricity transformers to communities across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
The initiative, which aligns with Governor Alex Otti’s commitment to improving power supply and accelerating infrastructure development, is aimed at reconnecting communities that have remained in darkness due to faulty or unavailable transformers while enhancing the stability of electricity supply across the state.
Speaking during the official distribution ceremony held on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the Ministry’s headquarters, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, said the exercise was in line with Governor Otti’s directive to consolidate electricity infrastructure and improve access to power for residents across Abia.
The Commissioner explained that the intervention forms part of the Governor’s broader agenda to ensure that no community is left behind in the state’s ongoing transformation, particularly those that have suffered prolonged power outages because of transformer-related challenges.

He noted that the transformers would be deployed to strategic communities across the state to strengthen existing electricity networks, improve the quality of power supply and support economic activities in both urban and rural areas.

“Today, we are commencing the distribution of transformers to communities across the 17 Local Government Areas of Abia State.
“This is in line with the directives of His Excellency, Governor Dr. Alex Otti, to enhance and consolidate electricity infrastructure within the state.
“These transformers will be installed across various electricity networks within Umuahia and other parts of Abia to strengthen and boost electricity infrastructure.
“It is one of the programmes of the State Government to ensure that electricity reaches our people, especially those in rural communities that have remained without power due to transformer-related challenges,“ Engr. Monday stated.
The Commissioner further disclosed that the current distribution represents only the first phase of a larger intervention programme, revealing that while 50 communities are benefiting in the present exercise, another 50 communities will receive transformers during the second phase scheduled for the third quarter of the year.
According to him, the phased approach underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that electricity infrastructure is continuously expanded to meet the needs of communities across the state.
“Today, we are distributing transformers to 50 communities across the state. This is the first batch, and within the third quarter, we intend to commence the second batch, which will also cover another 50 communities.
“It is a continuous intervention aimed at addressing electricity needs across the state,“ Engr. Monday stated.
Explaining the process adopted in selecting beneficiary communities, the Commissioner stressed that the Ministry followed a transparent, needs-based assessment to ensure that communities with the most pressing electricity challenges received priority.
He disclosed that although numerous applications were received from communities seeking transformers, the Ministry carefully evaluated each request to ensure fairness and equitable distribution of the facilities.
“The selection is based primarily on need. We receive applications from different communities, but we carry out proper assessments because there are communities that already have two or three functional transformers and still apply whenever distribution is announced.
“Our responsibility is to ensure that transformers get to communities that genuinely require them.
“While we also observe the principle of first-come, first-served, priority is always given to areas with the greatest need,“ Engr. Monday explained.
Addressing concerns over the protection of the newly distributed transformers, the Commissioner emphasized that safeguarding public infrastructure is a collective responsibility involving both government and host communities.
He revealed that every benefiting community must sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry, accepting responsibility for protecting the transformer from vandalism and theft.
“It is not the responsibility of the government alone. The communities must take ownership of these facilities because once a transformer is vandalized, the entire community is thrown into darkness.
“Before any transformer is handed over, representatives of the benefiting community sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry, committing to protect the infrastructure.
Government is also strengthening security through the military, the police, Homeland Security and community vigilantes, but community ownership remains the most effective safeguard,“ he added.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiary communities, the member representing Umuahia Central State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Anthony Chinasa Abiola, who received the transformer for Ward 3, Umuahia Central, and the President General of Okaiuga Nkwoegwu, Engr. Victor Ihediwa, who received the transformer on behalf of the Nkwoegwu community, expressed profound appreciation to Governor Alex Otti for his unwavering commitment to improving electricity supply across the state.
They also commended the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, for ensuring a transparent and seamless distribution process, while assuring the government that the benefiting communities would take full ownership of the transformers and protect them from vandalism to guarantee su
stainable electricity supply for their people.
